The Synovial Membrane and the Synovial Fluid with Special Reference to Arthritis and Injuries of the Joints
نویسنده
چکیده
This monograph is based upon the findings of a large amount of original research conducted by the author over a period of fifteen years. His work proves that the old theories regarding the structure and function of the synovial membrane, and the origin and function of the synovial fluid, are inadequate. A proper study of the synovial membrane reveals that it is not a simple structure throughout; it contains secretory elements in certain areas. These areas produce the normal synovial fluid, which consists chiefly of mucin, by active secretion. This would seem to dispose of the theories which seek to account for the presence of mucin by calling it the interstitial tissue of the synovial cells, produced by their degeneration. In pathological conditions, effusions consist of the mucin produced by the activity of the secreting cells and also of a transudate or exudate derived, via the synovial membrane, from the circulation. There is thus ascribed to the synovial membrane a_ dual structure and function, and to the fluid a dual origin. Much of the book is taken up by descriptions of experimental technique and results, and tables of data and other findings. The concluding chapters indicate the clinical applications of all this work, and the reader will find suggestions for routine biochemical and microscopical investigation of .joint effusions. A thoughtful and painstaking book, it is .recommended to those interested in the problems of joint conditions, both medical and surgical.

A Pathologic and Microbiologic Study on Bovine Arthritis Associated with Mycoplasma spp.
3450 bovine from different breeds and ages were clinically examined for the presence of arthritis. 120 cases showed macroscopic evidences of arthritis. Mycoplasma spp were isolated from synovial fluid of 21 affected animals. In addition to Mycoplasma spp. Arcanobacterium pyogenes and Staphylococcus epidermidis were isolated from 2 cases. The synovial fluid was markedly increased, straw color, t...
متن کاملSynovial fluid inflammatory cytokines and proteins in clinically healthy and arthritic joint of dromedary camels (Camelus dromedarius)
Analyzing the synovial fluid is one of the common methods to diagnose the articular problems to detect the stage and express the prognosis. Such gross, cytological, and biochemical analysis of synovial fluids can aid in the diagnosis of various joint diseases. Objectives: Normal values for synovial fluid in the camels have been described previously; however, there are no reports regarding conce...
متن کاملمقایسه سطح پروتئین شوک حرارتی- 70 در مایع سینویال بیماران مبتلا به آرتریت روماتوئید و اوستئوآرتریت
Background: Heat-shock proteins are part of a strictly controlled biological system that allows organisms to respond to environmental stresses. Different proinflammatory cytokines are present in the synovial tissue of rheumatoid arthritis patients. Such tissues respond to stress and induce heat-shock proteins. In addition, synovial cells are exposed to mechanical stress caused by joint motion. ...

Background: Triggering receptors expressed on myeloid cells i.e soluble triggering expressed on myeloid cells-1 (STREM-1) is inducible on monocyte/macrophages and neutrophils and accelerates tissue destruction by propagating inflammatory responses in disease related to bacterial infections. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of STREM-1 in the synovial fluid to identify septic...
متن کاملEffect of Angiotensin II on Blood Flow in Acute and Chronically Inflamed Knee Joints of Rabbits: The Role of Nitric Oxide
Background: Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) upregulation in stromal cells of joints affected by rheumatoid arthritis may lead to higher tissue angiotensin II that is a vasoconstrictor and mitogen factor. To date, the role of angiotensin II on regulating blood flow in inflamed joints has not been studied. Methods: Acute and chronic joint inflammation was induced in rabbits by intra-articular...
متن کاملBilateral Synovial Knee Chondromatosis in a Patient with Rheumatoid Arthritis: Case-report and Literature Review
We presented a female patient with RA complaining of progressive pain, swelling, and crepitation of the knee joints that was diagnosed with bilateral synovial chondromatosis (SC) of both knees. Radiographies revealed characteristic findings of SC including multiple calcified multifaceted loose bodies within both knees. Removal of cartilaginous segments as well as total synovectomy was performed...
